The 28 lunar mansions

The Moon takes about 27⅓ days to go round the sky, so it spends roughly one night in each of 28 stations. Arab star-watchers named these stations long before Islam; the astronomers of Baghdad measured them, and astrologers used them to read a birth and to choose the right night for a task. Their Indian cousins are the 27 nakshatras.

Questions people ask

Frequently asked questions

What are the 28 lunar mansions?

They are 28 stations along the Moon's monthly path, named by Arab star-watchers after the stars that mark them, such as the Pleiades (al-Thurayyā) and Aldebaran (al-Dabarān). The Moon spends roughly one night in each.

Which lunar mansion is the Moon in tonight?

This page works it out from the real sky every time you open it and marks tonight's mansion in the list above.

How do I find my birth mansion?

Enter your birthday on the Three Skies page. Lazward calculates where the Moon was when you were born and shows your mansion beside your Western and Vedic signs.

How are the lunar mansions different from the nakshatras?

Both divide the Moon's path into stations. The Indian nakshatras are 27 and counted from the fixed stars; the 28 Arabic mansions, as al-Bīrūnī and the Picatrix give them, start from the beginning of Aries.
